Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 034801 (2009) [4 pages]Collisions of the Second Kind in a Penning TrapReceived 25 July 2008; published 21 January 2009 Employing a simple analytic model, we demonstrate that electrons oscillating in a Penning trap may drain the energy stored in an active medium. For this process to happen, the electrons must become bunched, and the energy imparted to these electrons allows them to leave the trap resulting in a train of bunches, their angular frequency corresponding to the medium’s resonance. © 2009 The American Physical Society URL:
