Phys. Rev. Lett. 41, 296–298 (1978)Fluctuations Due to Zero-Point Motion of Surface Vibrations in Deep-Inelastic RectionsReceived 17 May 1978; published in the issue dated 31 July 1978 The quantal fluctuations in energy loss, scattering angle, and angular momentum transfer in heavy-ion collisions due to the excitation of surface modes is studied in a classical model by utilizing a distribution of shapes, representing the zero-point fluctuations as initial conditions. For grazing impact parameters this leads to a clear separation between deep-inelastic and quasielastic events. © 1978 The American Physical Society URL:
