Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 700–702 (1985)Flicker Noise in Frequency Fluctuations of LasersReceived 18 March 1985; published in the issue dated 12 August 1985 Measured frequency fluctuation spectra Sδf in ring lasers show that Sδf=h-1/ν+h-2/ν2 at low Fourier frequencies ν, while white noise prevails at higher frequencies. Experimentally, Sδf=(A̅ f02/Q4)(1/ν) has been found for the dependence of the 1/ν noise (flicker noise) on the quality factor Q, with A̅ ≈4 (f0=laser frequency ). The Q-4 dependence is readily explained by loss (or gain) fluctuations, through use of a Van der Pol oscillator. © 1985 The American Physical Society URL:
