Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 2404–2407 (1987)Enhancement of the relative (ΔS=1)/(ΔS=0) response of 40Ca at high excitation energiesReceived 24 February 1987; published in the issue dated 8 June 1987 Spin-flip probabilities have been measured for inelastic proton scattering from 40Ca at 319 MeV at angles between 3° and 12° and excitation energies up to about 40 MeV. These data can be directly related to the relative [(spin transfer)/(no spin transfer)] nuclear response via one model-dependent variable. Nuclear spin excitations appear relatively suppressed at low excitation energies but surprisingly enhanced at the highest excitation energies at intermediate angles. Many features of the data can be explained with a slab nuclear response with random-phase-approximation correlations. © 1987 The American Physical Society URL:
