Phys. Rev. Lett. 61, 1237–1240 (1988)New Stability Limit of Electrons Trapped on the Surface of Liquid HeliumReceived 1 February 1988; published in the issue dated 5 September 1988 We report the discovery of a density, n, and electric field, Ep, dependent critical temperature for electrons trapped on the surface of liquid helium for densities n>1.2Ep/2πe. Above this critical temperature a finite fraction of the electrons escape rapidly from the surface into the vacuum. The critical temperature increases with decreasing density, for a given electric field. © 1988 The American Physical Society URL:
