Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 3091–3094 (1993)Determination of the exchange splitting of the shape resonance of O2 using the core hole decay spectrum as a ‘‘fingerprint.’’Received 15 July 1993; published in the issue dated 8 November 1993 We have determined the exchange splitting of the 1σg-13σu shape resonance excitation of gas phase O2, which cannot unambiguously be identified using conventional absorption spectroscopy. By identifying the electronic decay spectrum of the shape resonance excitation we could separately monitor the decay of the σ* shape resonance and the Rydberg states. Using this fingerprint method we measured the pure core to 3σu bound state absorption spectrum in partial secondary electron yield spectroscopy. © 1993 The American Physical Society URL:
