The experimental observation of a zigzag instability of the stripes in a planar dc-driven gas discharge system is reported. The stripes in the spatial distribution of current develop from a homogeneous state as the global current is increased. It is shown that the phenomenon is specific for solitary stripes. This finding confirms recent theoretical predictions related to the instability of these localized states in reaction-diffusion media, which is followed by generation of the traveling zigzag wave propagating along a stripe.
