We have measured highly resolved flight time spectra of slow Na+ ions produced by near threshold dissociative ionization of Na2. Single rotational levels ( J = 16) were prepared by optical-optical double resonance into vibrational levels from v = 50–69 in the 41Σg+ state. For v = 52 and 55 strong evidence exists for the significant production of ion fragments with near zero kinetic energy. A detailed Monte Carlo simulation agrees well with experimental fragment flight time behavior and provides a sensitive test for calculations of the 12Σu+ ion potential.
