Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1186–1189 (1998)Near Threshold Dissociative Ionization of Na2 in the 41Σg+ StateReceived 10 October 1997; published in the issue dated 9 February 1998 We have measured highly resolved flight time spectra of slow Na+ ions produced by near threshold dissociative ionization of Na2. Single rotational levels ( J = 16) were prepared by optical-optical double resonance into vibrational levels from v = 50–69 in the 41Σg+ state. For v = 52 and 55 strong evidence exists for the significant production of ion fragments with near zero kinetic energy. A detailed Monte Carlo simulation agrees well with experimental fragment flight time behavior and provides a sensitive test for calculations of the 12Σu+ ion potential. © 1998 The American Physical Society URL:
