A new method for producing a phase state by two-photon absorption is proposed. We show that such a process conserves the phase of an initial coherent state |α and converts it to |ψ = (|0+eiφ|1)/2, where α = |α|eiφ. Therefore, we obtain desirable phase states by controlling the phase of the initial coherent state. Appropriate materials with a reasonable two-photon absorption rate are proposed.
