Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 3558–3561 (1999)Generation of Phase States by Two-Photon AbsorptionReceived 2 September 1998; published in the issue dated 25 October 1999 A new method for producing a phase state by two-photon absorption is proposed. We show that such a process conserves the phase of an initial coherent state |α〉 and converts it to |ψ〉 = (|0〉+eiφ|1〉)/√2, where α = |α|eiφ. Therefore, we obtain desirable phase states by controlling the phase of the initial coherent state. Appropriate materials with a reasonable two-photon absorption rate are proposed. © 1999 The American Physical Society URL:
