Evolution of a model population in 2D "ideological space" under the competing influences of "conformity" and "dissent". In the model, nonconformist members reproduce more, with offspring replacing other random members. The image shows a population initially made up of 2 close groups (red) which splits up due to "dissent"; as the tendency to conform comes into play it regroups, eventually forming 3 distinct opinion clusters (mauve).
