Editorial: Senior Editor Gene Wells Retires (November 26, 2001)

For the last 30 years Gene Wells has been a mainstay of the PRL Editorial force. His skill, knowledge, judgment, and dedication to the journal have been key factors underlying the success of the journal and its role among scientific research publications. In particular, his understanding of condensed matter physics and of physicists has led to the high reputation of the journal in that important area.

Gene has retired from his position as Editor as of November 9, 2001. To say that he will be missed is an understatement, but Gene and the other Editors have worked hard to see that the high standards which he has exemplified will be maintained. All of his colleagues at the American Physical Society Editorial Office wish him the best of times in his new life. We are sure that these sentiments are echoed by the many authors and readers who have benefited from his work.

Gene will continue to offer his advice and wisdom to the ongoing operation of the journal in the role of Consulting Editor.
